During the past two Years, European and North American experts have met to review current immigration policies and procedures, discuss issues of common transatlantic concern, and identify best practices that can be replicated on both sides of the Atlantic. They found many promising approaches for transatlantic exchange, but they also identified areas in which no best practices currently exist. When no best practices could be found, the group proposes options they believe will improve policies and practices.

This migration project is part of the Transatlantic Learning Community (TLC) which is designed to respond to the change of the agenda on both sides of the Atlantic. TLC is a common initiative of the Bertelsmann Foundation, the Bertelsmann Group on Policy Research, and the German Marshall Fund of the United States. It brings together those who work with the pressing issues on a daily basis in order to help them learn from each other's approaches and experiences.
