Historical Awareness and Border region identities
Research Group on German Affairs
13.09.2004 · C·A·P
The main focus of the Research Group on German affairs is historical awareness as an important factor of domestic and foreign politics. The German self-image as well as the perception of Germany and the Germans by their European neighbours is historically grounded. The current research project Border region identities, which is analyzing historical landmarks in the mutual perception of Germans and Czechs, is supported by the Volkswagen foundation. In co-operation with the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic the Research Group is trying to determine to what extent historical landmarks of border region identities in Bavaria and Bohemia either facilitate or complicate the communication and understanding between these two neighbouring states.
The aim of this research project, which will be finished in August 2005, is to develop strategies to improve border-crossing relations by means of historical analyses and qualitative data collection. The Research Group on German Affairs can carry on on the basis of its continual research tradition and its acquired expertise in the field of historical awareness since 1986. In cooperation with different institutions (such as ZUMA-Mannheim) and polling institutes (SINUS-Institut Heidelberg and Institut für Demoskopie Allensbach) qualitative and quantitative empirical surveys have been conducted in the old and new German federal states from 1989 to 1992. Thus, a data store on the subject "Historical awareness as a political factor in Germany" could be compiled, unique in social science research to that date. Based on these data, extended research is furthermore being implemented regarding the impact of Germany's "dual" history on self-perception, political culture, and the inner unification process. This research is being carried out, inter alia, in cooperation with foreign partners, such as the Institute for Social Research at the Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA.
