Europe's Continuing Enlargement: Implications for the Transatlantic Partnership
October 22/23, 2001, Washington, DC
|
By the end of 2002 NATO and the European Union will make decisions regarding their continuing enlargement, with far-reaching consequences not only for the shape of Europe, but also for the nature of the transatlantic partnership. If done well, the enlargement of both organizations promises to extend even further the already large common space of democratic stability on the European continent. If done erroneously, however, the potential for mistrust and division is high, with negative consequences for democracy and stability throughout Europe and greater likelihood of contentious relations across the Atlantic.
