The German Question in the Perception of the Germans

Not only does the German issue reflect world political constellations, but also the subjective dispositions of the Germans. The analysis of their values, orientations and attitudes towards their nation and towards Europe are of prime importance. How have these attitudes developed over the years of separation? Could the Germans maintain a feeling of belonging together or did living in two different states also lead to thinking in terms of two different nations? How can the relations between East and West Germans, oscillating from nearness to distance, be described? The present problems of internal unification indicate at the necessity to systematically analyze the attitudes of the citizens of Germany towards their nation.
The Research Group on German Affairs has therefore, on behalf of the "Enquete-commission of the German Bundestag on the elaboration of history and the consequences of the SED dictatorship in Germany" published a first report. A comprehensive data base has resulted from the project, which systematic evalution will follow in another research phase.
