The epoch-creating turning point of 1989 is gradually receding into a historical perspective, which is reason enough to cast different lights on the process of German unification and to extend the analysis, incorporating a detailed observation of the consequences of German unification for the country. Our research efforts have resulted in the new edition of the "Textbook on German unity", which has, after its first publishing in 1993 and the second edition in 1996, become a principal work on the history and the consequences of German unification.
Its subtitle "1949 - 1989 - 1999" suggests the main topic: 50 years have passed since the Federal Republic of Germany was founded, ten years of unity and forty years of separation. Historic aspects are therefore treated more comprehensively in this edition, topical questions are receding into background. Besides revising and actualizing a number of articles, the "Text on German unity. 1949 - 1989 - 1999" contains new headwords like "twofold state foundation" or "negotiations on German unity".
The new edition of the Textbook is supposed to be a comprehensive reference book, that focuses on time-historic, political and economic issues. National and international aspects are integrated: the state of Germany´s political, economic and societal life, the retrospective on the unification process, the history of the "German issue" and the present state of research.
