The Impact of EU Enlargement on European Integration and the Global Political Economy

Research Group on European Affairs

20.03.2006 · Renmin University of China & C·A·P

Collaborative research project of the Centre for European Studies at the Renmin University of China (Beijing) and the Center for Applied Policy Research (C·A·P) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, supported by the European Commission in the framework of the EU-China European Studies Centres Programme.

Objectives and institutional framework

The 5th EU enlargement in 2004 represents one of the most outstanding events in the process of European integration. It affects not only the ongoing internal integration process within the EU, but at the same time has a great impact on the world economy and international relations. This research project examines the impact of EU enlargement on both European integration and the global political economy from a multinational as well as interdisciplinary perspective. European and Chinese scholars will cooperate over a period of two years in order to analyze specific research questions under this major topic.

The project focuses on five dimensions of EU enlargement. Separate research groups have been established to analyze each of these dimensions. Each research group is chaired by one European and one Chinese expert and is composed of scholars of different nationalities and academic disciplines.
