In the latest issue of the EUISS’s Chaillot Paper series, Middle East experts discuss how the European Union can play a stronger role in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

In their contribution to the edited volume, C·A·P researcher Michael Bauer and Christian-Peter Hanelt from the Bertelsmann Stiftung look at the prospects and challenges of European support for mediation efforts and diplomatic activities that originate in the Middle East and therefore enjoy regional ownership and credibility. In particular they focus on the Arab League’s Arab Peace Initiative (API) that outlines the parameters for a comprehensive resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict based on the ‘land for peace’ principle. The API has been first proposed in 2002 and renewed in 2007.
